Questions to ask a Potential Contractor

We all know stories of someone, somewhere that got scammed, shoddy workmanship or an incomplete remodeling job. Unfortunately, this still happens today.

We've prepared a list of questions to ask a potential contractor - ahead of time - to be sure you receive what you wanted. Just as important, did the job quote agree with the final price and completion time?

Has the contractor been in business for a long period of time? Under the same name? Are they a well established company with actual current references? Verify no serious complaints are registered with the Better Business Bureau, Angies List, etc.
Can the contractor provide a recent list of customers that had a similar project? You are trying to determine how experienced the contractor really is.
What about Permits? Do they obtain them or do you? Most towns require a permit today for just about any type of remodel or change of a home. Does the contractor "Dismiss" needing a permit? If they are experienced, they should know up front if it is necessary.
Do they carry proper Insurance? Very important. Don't be afraid to ask for a copy of their policy! They should have personal liability, property damage coverage and workman's comp Insurance. The last thing you want is an injury on your project in your yard without the proper coverage. Be sure the certificates you obtain are current.
Is the contractor licensed to do whatever the project is, within your town's jurisdiction? Depending on the type of work requested, you want to be sure they are licensed and bonded to do that work.
